MCKAY'S TRAVEL, OUTDOORS AND PHOTOGRAPHY
Travel Blog
This is a good way for me to track and remember what I've done lately and in the past. A form of journaling. I have several reasons I blog, when I travel, when I spend time outdoors, when I enjoy any kind of experience and also when I eat/try new food.. Here are all of those posts. I usually post every month on average.

Busy Weekend in the Utah Rockies
I double dipped spending time outside this weekend. I did some great fishing on Friday as well as a strenuous hike on Saturday. It felt great to just be outside on both occasions, got to be in my new truck and I always enjoy solo time outdoors and just time outside in general. Fishing at Currant Creek I started my weekend on Friday with a fishing trip to Currant Creek, a small, quiet creek in Utah that isn’t heavily pressured by anglers. This made it an ideal spot to enjoy so

Moab + Arches 2026
Some of the family decided it was time to get the crew outside and do a trip to Arches National Park, especially because Landry, Mum and Dad have never seen delicate arch or anything in the park for that matter. We booked an AirBnb in Moab for the 9 of us and spent the weekend out there. Allie and I got in pretty early on Friday followed by the rest trickling in at different times during the evening. We spent all day in the park on Saturday doing the best hikes and viewpoint

St George, Hiking and My First Bass
Spent the weekend in St George and had some fun while we were down there. It was just a quick weekend trip but we filled our Saturday up. First thing we did was woke up and tried a new pastry shop that we heard was really good and it did not disappoint, usually I get pictures of that kindof stuff but we scarfed it down far too fast for any of that. We then went up to Snow Canyon State Park and did a few quick hikes there with Emmy in the backpack. She loved it and we saw som

Jensens Do: Cancun
Spring break 2026 was a full family trip to Cancun Mexico. Everyone was there for different times but we all overlapped for about 5 days. Coleson and Katie got there on the first day followed the next day by Allie, Emelia and me and Caleb, Gabie and Hazel. Mom, Dad and Landry as well as Charlee and Bridger got there on day 3. The all inclusive resort was a blast and everyone had a blast. The food was pretty good and I had to have had over 50 drinks led by the piña colada. The

Bookcliffs Winter Camp 2026
This was our 3rd year out in the winter for our campout/game drive. As per tradition we go out for a day and a half, sleep in a rough shelter (this time again at skull camp/skinwalker camp) and drive around looking for animals in the Bookcliffs. This year was a little different because we were scouting for shed spots and a little in the future because it is likely dad draws out this year. We stayed at Skinwalker Campsite again this year cause we have a nice spot set up and t

Fishing and Camping Uinta River
Decided to go out and get some time out of the city one last time before it got too cold. We packed up and left late on Thursday night just in time to set up camp and get to bed around midnight, after a terrible night of sleep for the 3 of us we were eager to get up early. Emmy had a blast setting up tents in the Uinta Canyon dispersed camping, despite being up late and face-planting out of her backpack seat. She had her little ewok suit that kept her warm all weekend and sh

Whiterocks Canyon/River Camp
This has been a wild year and it is crazy that it is already August. Because of the new baby, the new job, taking care of the house and the car accident back in the beginning of the year totaling my Explorer, I have had a very hard time getting out into nature like I usually do and I miss it. We finally just went out and had a fantastic little weekend out in the mountains. We tried a new spot up by Roosevelt called Whiterocks Canyon. There is a river that comes out of the hi

Hunting in South Africa
This will be my longest post yet because there is so much to cover, none of which really fits into any other sections like food reviews or photography. This was simply an adventurous hunting trip to the Limpopo province in South Africa. I am going to breaks this down into sections rather than days. I am going to skip over most of the travel because it was long and grueling both there and back. Lots of hours in a plane and just as many in airports. We flew into Polokwane, the

Bookcliffs Winter Camp 2025
It was that time of the year again, anyone that is tough or dumb enough heads out to the desert for a winter campout and wildlife drive or 2. It was a good time this year, we headed out early Saturday and had ample time to set up a real camp this time and the shelter was great. Found a rare shaded campsite that we are dubbing skull camp or skinwalker camp. Between that., the fact that I was overpacked for sleep and the temperature being a bit warmer, I think we all kept warm

Uinta Canyon Campout
For the 3rd year in a row we went out to Uinta Canyon for a campout on the Jensen side. It was a bit shorter this year and we only stayed for 2 nights over the weekend. Had some great time just hanging around the fire and chilling like usual. We spent far more time out fishing this time around. I went out 3 different times for a few hours each and caught quite a bit of trout and a couple pretty nice ones. I caught around 10 fish, a pile of smaller and beautiful brook trout, a

Voi - Ungatni Lodge
One of the highlights of the trip was our time in Ungatni. First off it was crazy how different Kenya can be, from the amazing beaches to the African savannah Kenya is quite diverse. The lodge itself is located right off the Tsavo East National Park and is situated right by a watering hole that constantly draws in wildlife. It was really cool to see all the classic Africa animals you see while listening to David Attenborough. Elephants, Zebras, Giraffes and everything in bet

Spring Bookcliffs 2024
Seems like I have been making my way out to the bookcliffs an awful lot over the last few years. This was a last minute planned trip that the whole fam took for a weekend. Headed up to the old Jensen campsite that the family has been going to for years, now known as chipmunk ridge. We did some of what we always do, knocking branches off dead trees, walking in the sagebrush and constantly dusting ourselves off. We did find a really cool find while out looking for sheds, a wi

Luck of the Draw: Part 2 - Angels Landing
Now not only was I lucky enough to draw for the Subway but I got a permit for Angels Landing for the next day as well. Now the view on this hike was amazing but that is not why there are so many people who are trying to do it. Angels Landing gives truth to the saying "Life is about the journey and not the destination."Don't get me wrong, the landing and view of all of Zion Canyon was a great spot for a snack. The real beauty of this hike in my opinion was the trail, the life

Luck of the Draw: Part 1 - The Subway
As most outdoor enthusiasts know, Zion National Park is home to some amazing sights and backcountry hikes. Unfortunately though they are very popular and permits are required for lots of the best ones. The Subway is one hike that requires a permit and after a few years of trying I finally got a permit through the lottery. The stars aligned just enough for me to be on a business trip in Vegas the same time so it was easy to get out to! Because I was working all day of the hik

Death Valley Rally
For our 5th anniversary we did a weekend trip through Las Vegas to Death Valley. Las Vegas was a blast, we were only there long enough for a nice dinner and a bit of time to chill. We went to a new place called Din Tai Fung and it was really good. The dumplings were steamed in bamboo bins and were fresh and delicious. We stayed at a new Marriott hotel by the strip and it was great too! Death Valley National Park was the next park on our list to check off. We were only there

Winter Campout Jan 2024
This was the first of hopefully many winter campouts in the Bookcliffs with the boys. We did a quick 1 night trip out to the dessert late Friday night. After setting up camp (A fire and a tarp out at the Jensens old campsite on East Bench Rd) we hung out around the fire, gathered enough wood for the night, filled up on some hot chocolate and went to bed. I kept very warm and comfy all night even though it got down to about -8C (18F) but could only sleep for a couple hours. I

Bloods Lake
Took one of the last chances of the year to do a hike without snow gear. After an hour of driving through the fall colors we stopped and did a short but great hike. What started in a forest of yellowed aspens shortly turned into evergreens, because of the shade, the recent snowfall hadn't melted, so the last mile was icy snowpack. The way up was tricky but it was fun sliding on the way down.

Red Pine Lake + Gloria Falls
Was able to do one last hike in the Utah mountains before the snow came. Made it just by a day. The hike was about 8 miles and just under 3000 ft of elevation gain. It wasn't easy but I cranked it out in just 3 hours of moving time. Spent about a half flying the drone around which is always fun to do! There was snow on the peaks and in some patches and the fall colors were in full force and it was a really pretty trail.

Mount Timpanogos Hike
The group finally decided to just do it and hike Mount Timp. I knew it was not going to be the easiest hike I have ever done but I was not expecting an 11 hour adventure. The scenery was fantastic, all the way up it was beautiful. We got to Emerald lake that was in a little bowl and that was amazing, a herd of mountain gots got less than 25 feet from us and one goat was hanging around with us while we ate a snack. The push up to the top was no joke and both sides of the trail
